Self

1996 • Novel

A young man, while travelling, after a meal of sweet potatoes one evening, wakes up the next morning, his birthday, in the body of a young woman. He is a young woman for seven years until, once more, one morning, she wakes up as a young man.

Yann Martel’s first novel is an exploration of boundaries and how we cross them and what the other side looks like.

“…now and again you encounter things that read so true, the sound they make resonates for hours, or even days. Self is still ringing in my ears.”
