Beatrice and Virgil

2010 • Novel

Beatrice, a donkey, and Virgil, a monkey, are deep friends. But their lives are not easy, not according to the playwright in whose play they are characters. Who is this playwright? What is his story? What is he hiding?

A writer meets him and tries to answer that question, at his peril. Beatrice and Virgil is an exploration of how we talk about great evil—in this case, the Holocaust—without tethering  that talk to history. That is, Beatrice and Virgil is an allegory.

“This novel is so haunting and provocative that I could not stop thinking of it for days.”
